The idea to form the Media Network on Orphans and Vulnerable Children was muted at a media breakfast hosted for media heads in Zambia by Care International, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Ministry of Sport, Youth and Child Development and the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services.
The Media Network, after the initial media workshop, started working with various media institutions at national and community level which brought together various journalists.
The interim chairperson was the late Singy Hanyona who spearheaded the formation of the Media Network in 2003 and later decided to serve as vice chairperson to the current coordinator, Henry Kabwe, who served as its first chairperson.
The main objective of the Media Network was to advocate for the upholding of children’s rights.
It has worked with various media institutions such as the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS), which covers the whole nation with reporters in all districts, television stations, the private community and mainstream media through the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia; the State controlled media, through the Press Association of Zambia (PAZA), and directly with the community media, spread across the nation.
The Media Network new, exciting programme is the Children’s News Agency (CNA), the Children’s Media Monitoring Project (CMMP) and the inclusion of children in all its programmes. |

Zambia’s nine provinces have diverse socio-economic and cultural challenges in the application of child rights are concerned. Reporters in these big and other small media institutions have been trained to cover ‘newsmakers’ and ‘newsworthy’ activities and children’s issues have been left out in the fray.
The Media Network has done trainings, media monitoring through adults and children, media awards, child discussion forums and is now running the Children’s News Agency (CNA). The African Charter on the Rights of Women and Children (ACRWC). |
